Seafields was launched at the UNFCCC climate change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow in 2021. The plan is to grow, harvest, process, bail and sink Sargassum in the Atlantic subtropical gyres and in doing so, sequester gigatons of carbon dioxide. It will play an active role in the carbon offset market, promote fisheries, and provide Sargassum to industry partners producing alternatives to fossil fuel products - all toward making a transformative impact on lowering CO2 emissions and ocean restoration.
Seafields is comprised of a group of entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers and policy experts and is informed by a Science Advisory Board comprised of pre-eminent experts in the fields of marine chemistry, biology and ecosystems attached to leading research organizations and universities around the world, including GEOMAR Research Institute at the University of Keil and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. We are also part of a broad coalition of ocean direct carbon removal researchers and practitioners working under the collaborative Ocean Visions research consortium, and a member of the United Nations Global Compact SafeSeaweed Coalition and the sustainability-focused World Ocean Council.
Our mission is to harness the huge amount of biomass that grows on the surface of the ocean in order to alleviate the climate crisis, restore ocean health, and rejuvenate the market for carbon removal. Seafields is developing a proprietary system to reliably and permanently capture carbon at scale by harvesting the floating seaweed Sargassum which can sequester and store greater amounts of carbon more quickly than terrestrial forests. Through the development of off-shore sustainable Sargassum farms we will produce cultivate, bale and sink carbon-rich biomass to the bottom of the ocean where it is locked away, effectively forever. We will also bring Sargassum to the market for high value alginates, bio-stimulants and other fossil-fuel replacements.
